Cartoon Network is promoting homophobia through their implications that there is something wrong with depicting a homosexual couple. These implications have been made by the way that they have forced the Adventure Time team to take down their harmless video in which they revealed one of the primary female characters of the show may have romantic feelings towards another girl. Many fans of the show support this couple, and the video itself was meant to gauge the fan reaction.
The episode prior to this that sparked the video in the first place, “What Was Missing”, includes a scene where one girl, Marceline, sings to the other, Princess Bubblegum, about wanting to be accepted by her. The episode ends to show that Bubblegum’s important missing item is a t-shirt she received from Marceline as a gift that she wears as pajamas. The two are depicted as adorable and innocent as kids shows are wont to be.
This episode was widely popular, and is currently not available to view on Cartoon Network’s website due to technical issues.
It’s difficult to be gay, and it’s difficult to be a kid who is a little different in today’s bigoted society. There is little to no representation of homosexuality in kids shows. Well, one cartoon team has decided maybe it’s time for that to change, only the network isn’t sure that’s such a good idea.
Help us urge Cartoon Network to allow future episodes depicting these two wonderful girls and the relationship between the two of them to be aired, and for this show to do what it does best in letting these characters be who they are.
